abbreviations and Symbols


With limited space to record information on test reports, testers will often use abbreviations on their reports, especially in the "assembly location" section, and sometimes in the test notes section. Below are a few of the common abbreviations that we use (or see) on test reports.

bhnd: behind
bldg: building
bsmt: basement

cnr: corner
cntr: center

dom: domestic

dr: door
dw: driveway

FDC: fire department connection
found: foundation

ft: feet
- G - 
gar: garage
- I - 
irr or irrig: irrigation
- L -
L: left
lg: large
ls: landscape
- M -
mach: machine
mech: mechanical
mtr: meter

N, NE, NW: north, northeast, northwest
nr: near
- O - 
opp mtr: across sidewalk from meter
opp: opposite (across from)

S, SE, SW: south, southeast, southwest

SOH: shutoff handle
SOV or sov: shutoff valve
sw: sidewalk or southwest, depending on context

We may also use the following symbols in the location description section:

🐶 (or 🐔, 🐇, 🐝) = assembly in area with dogs, chickens, rabbits, beehives (yep, we've seen 'em!), etc.
✊🚪 = knock at door before testing
💧 = box noted as flooding during prior test
✂🌿 = noted need for vegetation trim around box during prior test
⛏ = noted as requiring digging during prior test
